Year 1

In Year 1 Study Visit to Gallone's Ice Cream FactoryYear One the children consolidate and build upon their learning experiences. There is a slightly more formal approach to the curriculum, allowing the children to adapt quickly to new changes in routines and develop skills that are necessary for them to successfully work towards greater independence.

Literacy lessons focus on comprehension and sentence construction through a range of texts. The children read every day, with a broad and varied range of books. The children will develop a more advanced form of handwriting leading them towards joining in Year Two.

Numeracy lessons continue to build upon the children’s knowledge with plenty of practical and oral work.

Children enjoy developing their knowledge and understanding of the world through topic work with a Science, Geography or History focus to ensure a balanced curriculum. Topics include, Famous People and Events, Our Local Area and a Foreign Country, Forces, Plants and Food Science. Educational visits extend the learning experiences.

During the week the class also participate in P.E., Speech and Drama, Music and French lessons - all taught by Prep School staff. They also have a weekly I.C.T. lesson in one of the Prep School suites.

It is important for the children to become confident when speaking to an audience and children are given the opportunity to speak in class assemblies and the Christmas play.
