Match Reports

v Winchester House Lost 35 - 45

Winchester led from the start in a closely fought, fast-flowing game. Both teams showed a strong determination and much courage in their forward play, with both rucks and mauls being even. The Spratton backs developed their shape the more the game progressed and whilst Spratton’s tackling was generally good, the size of the Winchester team started to tell with tries appearing through defensive gaps. The U10 Bs should hold their heads high and think hard about what they have done well and what they need to improve. RDW

v Akeley Wood Lost 35 - 50

What an exciting game full of exciting rugby. Tries were scored alternately by both sides until eventually Akeley Wood took a two try advantage in to half time. The second half saw Spratton's rugby improve a notch with good ruck and mauling skills by the forwards allowing confidence to spread throughout the team. However, after working so hard to get our tries we lost the advantage immediately by losing a try from the restart. Akeley Wood were a bigger team. We tackled well and their size was not an advantage. But, being awake and strengthening our defensive line will need to be our target areas if we want to improve. RDW

v Caldicott Lost 17- 37

Achieving in the Caldicott match has been the team target all term. So it was fantastic to see Spratton begin spritedly, pushing the Caldicott team back. With a hunger and drive, Spratton put together some powerful forward rugby that slowly led towards the Caldicott line and a try for Conrad. The Caldicott backs however made use of the big pitch and were able to run four tries in before half time. The second half was closer with Conrad again and Adam scoring. As Caldicott were using a large pitch with posts, conversions were included in the points tally and Rory converted his first clinically. The U10Bs may have lost but they can hold their heads high, everyone having worked hard throughout the whole match. Our next step will be to develop a broader defensive back line. RDW

v Stamford  Lost 20 - 65

The visit of Stamford was clearly an eye opener for many of the U10B side. A bigger desire from bigger players made it particularly difficult for Spratton to develop their play. Compared to the Caldicott game Spratton made life easy for Stamford. They did not tackle hard or contest the ball in forward play as well as they had done previously. This gave Stamford more possession, more time on the ball and more opportunities to score. A day to see the importance of strong defending. U10B must learn from this. RDW

v Warwick  Lost 15 – 55

Despite a similar score to last week, Spratton’s effort was completely different. The forwards worked hard, constantly driving, looking to win the ball, really wanting to win. The Spratton backs defended well achieving three excellent tries. The Warwick back line had very little time on the ball before being tackled, Rory and Edward were outstanding. The Warwick tries however kept coming and this was normally through using the width of the pitch by effective handling in the backs and a tenacious scrum half.  Spratton knew they should have made more tackles and sadly the scoreline does not reflect the excellent team effort against a larger school. RDW

v Wellingborough Lost 0 - 50

An identical team to last week in identical positions and again Spratton's control of the ball and recycling looked convincing. The first half was dominated by Spratton pushing ever closer to the Wellingborough line. Sadly however, after occasional turnovers Wellingborough were able to run through the Spratton line again and again. By half time Wellingborough lead by 20 points. The second half was a repeat of the first, excellent driving by Spratton but further point scoring by Wellingborough. Overall Spratton must not feel down about their performance, the rugby skills are there but the tackling and defensive line still seem fragile. RDW

v Swanbourne House Lost 25 - 35

Moving the back line around, combined with William's birthday made a tremendous difference to the U10B performance at Swanbourne - our best yet. Our tackling was fantastic, our use of the ball excellent. Archie made many runs at the Swanbourne backs, gaining valuable yards. This time we scored first and Swanbourne replied. At half time we were ahead by one try. Our only problem this time was defending from restarts. Our juggled back line was a little narrow and despite parents and coaches calling for a wider defence in the final three minutes of the game, Swanbourne managed to take the lead and steal the match. A truly amazing performance and a game enjoyed by everyone. Well played everybody. RDW

v Bedford Prep Lost 35 - 50

Our final two games and U10B have improved immensely this term. This game in particular should have been the first win of the season. After taking the lead in the first half, the U10B spent most of the half camped next to the Bedofrd Prep try line. The constant pressure applied would sometimes break through for a Spratton try, however it also led to turn overs and tries being scored at the other end as Bedford Prep would run through our tacklers. If a game was to be won on amount of possession the Spratton would have won convincingly. But tries are what count and by the end Bedford Prep had run through us too many times. RDW

v Bedford Modern Drew 20 - 20

What a match to finish the season with. Two equally talented teams matching each other try for try. Spratton's confidence had grown despite this term's run of results, scrums continually dominated by the Spratton forwards. Yet  tries were scored in equal measure by both sides with Spratton taking a slender lead into half time. The second half was no different, both teams fought hard to score. Momentary losses of concentration can change the course of events and so it was when Bedford Modern scored a quick try from a restart to take the lead. Spratton levelled the score and to a man, turned to the touchline, frustrated, when Mr Rudkin blew the final whistle with Spratton again on the opposition try line. Parents looked on with pride as the Spratton Hall team worked closely together, building their rugby, recycling the ball efficiently and defending doggedly. A truly remarkable team. Well done U10B. RDW
