Match Reports

v Akeley Wood   30/09/09     Won 30 - 0

A good start to the season, though it was also clear that this was our first game. The first half was a rather scrappy affair although there was some strong, hard running by a number of players. The second half saw us begin to find our feet and there were a few good line movements. There is lots to work on but we've made a good first step in the right direction. Well done!   CC

v Caldicott    07/11/09            Won 35 - 25

Saturday proved to be a very tense affair for the Under 10A team. From the start, we played with hunger and determination. The backs exhibited flair and skill, matched with great driving and defence by the forwards. There was never more than one try between the two teams, right up until the very end. The last minutes were down to who wanted the victory most! With Caldicott camped on our try-line, the Spratton boys put their bodies on the line, defending for three minutes before turning the ball over and gaining a penalty. This saw us move the ball down the line with Calum R crossing the try line for the final try - giving us an excellent, hard-fought victory but a fully deserved one! No player can be singled out as each gave 150% from start to finish! Keep working hard and our season will be an unforgettable one! CC

Bilton Grange Festival  11/11/09

 v S. Anselms  11/11/09        Won 10-0
Our first game of the festival started off slowly, with much of the play taking place in the centre of the field. This, combined with the fact that our handling was not up to scratch, was probably due to our hands still being cold. It was clear that towards the end of the game we were beginning to find our feet and ran in three quick and well-executed tries.
v Bilton Grange  11/11/09       Won 20-0
We started and finished  this game at an excellent pace. We settled quickly into a rhythm, displaying some clinically perfect rugby - running in four fantastic tries which went unanswered. Our confidence was high and we gained momentum fast.
v Eversfield Prep 11/11/09      Won 15-0
This was not an easy game for us as, initially, we seemed to have lost the rythym we had gained in the previous game. However, we scored three hard-earned tries and showed a lot of character in the way we continued pushing for the win.
Semi-finals
v Wellingborough 11/11/09     Won 15-0
Our semi final turned out to be a bit of a scrappy affair, definitely not an example of our finest play. Again though, we showed plenty of character in gaining the three tries by driving hard and spreading the ball wide where possible.
Final
v Akeley Wood 11/11/09      Won 20-5
It was obvious we saved the best for last! From the start, we played with determination and with one thing in mind: a win! We played the clinical type of rugby we have been talking about, forwards-driving the ball up, with it being laid back for the backs to score in the corners, and Fred Lowe scoring under the posts. We also avoided the close game which they tried to get us to play. Unfortunately, we conceded our only try of the tournament in this game due to a couple of slips in our defence, but this is something we can work on.

Spratton Under 10As: Festival Winners - The afternoon was an excellent achievement, boys! Well done!! CC

v Stamford 14/11/09       Won 20-15

This weekend turned out to be another nail-biter for us! The wind did no favours for either side, causing plenty of handling errors. But congratulations must go to both teams for their commitment and competitive play. Half-time saw the scores level at five-all. Within five minutes of the restart, we found ourselves trailing 15-5, again due to poor defence (an area we need to work on.) But all credit must go to the character shown by the team in coming back with three excellent tries, to take the game 20-15. Another victory - but plenty to work on this week! CC

v Warwick  21/11/09     Drew 20-20

Another nail-biting match! Having to make a couple of positional changes, as well as incurring an injury at half-time, didn't seem to disrupt us as much as I thought it would. The reason for this was the huge amount of effort each individual player put in. Our tackles were monstrous and our support-play excellent. With a half-time lead of 10-5, it was sure to be a tense second half. Our scrums were not as strong as I would have liked; this had us on the back foot at times. There were five minutes left and we were down 20-10, but again the incredible character shown by the team pulled us through with two tries - the last one a brilliant sprint by Calum for the corner flag, keeping our unbeaten record intact, leaving a very proud coach indeed! CC

v Wellingborough  25/11/09  Won 35-10

From the start of this game, we battled to get out of first gear. Our scrums and rucks were not as good as they should have been, and our general play was not up to scratch. Half-time saw the scores level at 5-5. Within a minute of the second half, Wellingborough scored and we found ourselves trailing 10-5. With 10 minutes left, we suddenly seemed to go straight into 5th gear and scored 6 unanswered scintillating tries! The backs ran with purpose, while the forwards drove with aggression. Let's start in 5th gear against Swanbourne! CC

v Swanbourne House  28/11/09  Won 45-10

Excellent handling and running by the backs, combined with much-improved rucking and mauling by the forwards, resulted in us scoring nine tries in this game. The second half was perhaps not as good as it should have been as we seemed to have relaxed a little. As a result, we let in two easy tries via slips in our defence. With two games remaining, we need to perfect our scrumming technique and remember a solid defence will win games! CC

v Bedford Prep  2/12/09   Won 35-15

A game played with determination and drive! There were moments of great handling by the backs, and much-improved scrumming by the forwards. Our seven tries can be attributed to the team's faultless reading of the game. As in the previous game, one or two slips in defence cost us. One more game, boys - let's make it as close to perfect as possible and end this very successful season on a high note! CC

v Bedford Modern 5/12/09  Won 30-5

Our final game was just as impressive as the season has been. We started as we have all season long - a little slowly in the first half, perhaps missing a couple of try-scoring opportunities, but nevertheless ending the half 10-5 up. The second half saw us shift into 5th gear, and with excellent interlinking between the forwards and backs, five great tries were scored. Special mention must be made of our excellent driving, in mauls, by our forwards with Luke, Jack and Adam all peaking at the end of the season. Our defence was also superb, with Fred shutting down their backs at flyhalf with his fearless tackling. Christian's quick recycling of the ball at the base of the scrum, ensured our backs had ample ball to run with. Our centre combination of Jacob and Calum, who read the game excellently, always had us on the front foot on attack, enabling Miles and Toby to use this to their advantage, with Miles scoring a number of scintillating tries this season! Being so versatile, Felix was invaluable in this game, playing at both fly-half and hooker, showing no fear, tackling boys double his size! In the end, another fantastic second-half, ending a memorable unbeaten season in which the boys can all be proud of themselves. An area to work on at Colts level would be to start the game the way we start the second half! Well done, boys! CC
