Match Reports

 v Kimbolton - won by 43 runs

A gentle introduction to the cricket term, Kimbolton fielded first, giving Spratton a chance to show how well they could build an innings. After Jack was run out, Jacob and calum built a strong score in a methodical way, with Miles adding a few valuable runs at the end. Generally the batting was cautious and risk free and many singles went begging. Spratton closed on 123 for 4. Kimbolton’s reply was hampered by regular wicket loss through some excellent bowling by Luke (4 for 9), backed up by tight fielding. Extras began to generate the biggest total (42) which will clearly need looking at. Kimbolton’s innings finished on 81 all out. The Spratton fielding was good and difficult catches by Calum and Christian were held. A promising start.(RDW)

v Great Houghton cancelled due to rain.

v Akeley Wood - won by 117 runs

The game began in light rain and a cold wind as Toby won the toss and batted. Spratton’s new opening pair Miles and Jacob put on a solid 87 for the first wicket. With an inexperienced Akeley Wood fielding side, the quick running between the wickets, helped to push the run rate up to nearly 6 an over. After both had been caught Calum blazed a quick 16 from fifteen balls and Freddie and Toby added another fifteen between them. Extras reached 100 as quick thinking allowed Spratton to run many byes and even wides. The final inning total reached a healthy 187 for 4. Akeley Wood’s reply struggled to start with further tight bowling from Luke and Christian, Calum and Felix. The bowling highlight however was Connor’s three overs, getting 3 for 13. Akeley Wood finished on 70 for 8. Extras given away were only 31, but 26 of these were from no balls or wides, an area that needs further work. Overall though a strong performance showing how the U10s have listened and improved their game. (RDW)

v Winchester House - Spratton Lost by 3 wickets

Batting first on a warm Saturday morning, hopes were high of a big score. However with the loss of the top order batsmen very quickly, to some strong swinging accurate bowling. Spratton needed to dig in and look to last the overs to get as many runs as they could. Felix proved to be the thorn in Winchester’s side and managed to remain at the crease and see the overs out. A score of 75 on the board. After tea Winchester House started to settle down to run scoring, when Luke produced some accurate bowling to dismiss two in one over. With Jacob and Christian picking up a wicket each, sadly they were the only wickets to fall and Connor’s first ball was thumped back over his head for Winchester to overhaul the Spratton score. The telling differences between the teams relied on depth of quality bowling and making the most of each member of the team. Spratton struggled in both areas., but even the best bowlers need a score to defend and the U10As did not have enough. (RDW)

v Bedford Prep - Spratton won by 13 runs

A long trip to Bedford and again batting first, a more confident batting side started to put together a total. After losing two quick wickets Calum and Toby settled down to bat most of the overs and build a partnership of 76, before Toby was out caught for 13. Calum batted on looking to push the score but also was caught on 38. The innings ended with Spratton on 102, the score book reflecting the strength Spratton have when taking quick singles. After tea, Bedford Prep looked calm and confident, moving the score on to 40 before losing three wickets by 46, Miles, Calum and Christian taking one each. With the runs starting to appear regularly, alongside occasional wickets falling, a decisive over by Felix rocked the Bedford Prep reply. Two wickets fell but Bedford Prep still only needed twenty to win.   With Luke’s return at the end of the overs his more accurate bowling finished the game in the 24th over. A good win but moreover an exciting game with Spratton holding their nerve. (RDW)

v Witham Hall - Spratton won by 10 runs

Batting first, Spratton lost Jacob to the first ball of the day and then had to rely on Freddie to stay at the crease and begin building a decent total. As both Calum and Miles came and went, Freddie began to build his innings with Toby scoring an excellent 21 runs before being caught and bowled. Toby (25) and Conrad (18) then forged a second batting partnership to take Spratton’s total to 125 for 4. Despite lots of quick singles on a small pitch, this was still an achievable score. Witham were quick to reply and matched Spratton’s run rate up to the twelfth over with 63 for 3. Witham’s run rate stayed high but at the expense of the batsmen with four run outs . Eventually the overs ebbed away leaving Witham ten runs short. A Spratton win, but a close game (RDW).

v Bromsgrove - Spratton won by 36 runs

After two wins Spratton should have been sprightly and confident against Bromsgrove. But with Conrad and Freddie going cheaply, Jacob (18) was called upon to stay at the crease and build a big total. With another good innings from Toby (14) and with cameos from Miles and Felix, Spratton finished on 124 for 5. Spratton’s bowling was as accurate as ever with Jacob picking up two wickets and Luke only giving away six runs from four overs. Bromsgrove batted spiritedly reaching 88 for 7. Overall, It was a slightly lack lustre performance from Spratton but a win all the same. (RDW)

v Bedford Modern  - Spratton lost by 3 wickets

A Saturday trip for the final game of the season, to a chilly Bedford and a game shortened to 20 overs. Spratton won the toss and batted first again. It was quite a shock however, to see a very disciplined bowling side show how to bowl accurately and economically. They gave away very few extras and started to rattle Spratton’s batting. Toby (23), now a reliable number 3 and Freddie (18) were the pick of the batsmen, remaining at the wicket for most of the Spratton innings before Freddie was bowled in the 16th and Toby being run out in the 18th over. It was a small score of 69 for 6 that Spratton had to defend. The BMS innings began confidently showing a strong batting line up, however despite regular glimpses of batting prowess with glorious boundaries, wickets continued to tumble. By the eighteenth over and with a wide, BMS passed the Spratton score. It was a valiant effort by Spratton. (RDW)

In Summary

Overall, a promising season showing evidence of a great deal learned. The bowling actions are smooth and becoming more accurate, the batting strong with an increasing range of shots. Most importantly the game play understanding has improved a great deal and allowed the U10As to interpret what is happening and react all the quicker. (RDW)
