Science Laboratories

Spratton Hall has three multi-purpose science laboratories which can be used to teach all three of the main sciences. Each room is equipped with multiple gas taps, electrical points and sinks to allow all children to easily participate in practical work. Each room also has data projectors which are in regular use to aid the teaching of science.

All three rooms are generously equipped with equipment to enable pupils to work on most practical tasks in groups no bigger than pairs. This encourages all children to actively take part in practical discovery. Lessons for Year 3 to Year 6 are in general science, and can be taught in any of the three rooms.

In Years 7 and 8, where the sciences are split into Biology, Physics and Chemistry, then each room has certain specific design features which enable it to become more specialised.

Biology Lab

The Biology Lab is always a bright and colourful room, with displays reflecting the latest seasonal topics, as well as technical equipment like microscopes available for use. We have a live bird-cam linked to the television in the room giving live footage of local birds visiting the science garden. The Biology lab also has direct access to the science garden which is used for various seasonal studies as well as looking at micro-habitats and plants and trees.

Physics Lab

As well as being well equipped with practical equipment, the Physics lab has a mini computer suite of 8 networked computers attached to it. This fantastic resource allows pupils to use datalogging in practical tasks and get instant results uploaded for further analysis. It can also be used for research, graph work, and projects, as necessary.

Chemistry Lab

The Chemistry Lab has a fume cupboard incorporated into its design to allow demonstration practicals of certain chemical reactions to be shown to pupils. It is also adjoining our Prep Room, where our full-time lab technician is able to prepare and provide equipment and support to all three laboratories as necessary.
