Match Reports
v Oakham U12A 0 - 6
A battling performance by the 3rd XI for their first match against a superior team. After the initial shock of playing on a full pitch, conceding some early goals cheaply, the team responded well in the second half and shored up the defence. Experience from this game can now be used to help develop the team and hopefully put on a more attacking show when we are against more equally skilled opposition. SRB
v Witham Hall 6 - 0
A much improved team performance by the 3rd XI saw them win comfortably against Witham Hall. The team played some nice hockey in the first half, passing much better, and using the wings to get the ball forward. When we got the ball in the D we took our chances well, and were 5-0 up at half time. The second half saw us continue to dominate but we just couldn't finish our chances as well, and we only scored once more. We can now look forward to our next game. Goal scorers: J. Cox - 3, T. Kubiena - 2, and F. Telfer - 1. SRB
v Bilton Grange 4 - 1
Another excellent performance saw us totally dominate the match from start to finish. Our defence started on their D and with some excellent rings of defence set up Bilton found it difficult to get out of their half. Sustained pressure saw us score a deflected goal, and then 2 more good conversions by H. Pease steering in hits by O. Brodie saw us 3-0 up at half time. The second half Bilton came out more energetically, but we dominated the midfield, J. Glew converting to take us 4-0. Some nice structure to the play is developing. SRB
v Bedford Prep 0 - 8
After having nearly a month off from hockey because of bad weather and the half term break, the 3rd XI found it difficult to get back into the groove against a stronger opposition. Many of the basic skills were rusty, and we found it difficult to clear our lines. 4 goals in each half were reflective of the pressure we were under, and despite battling away, we never really threatended their goal. We must keep practising our basic skills as they still need to be done with much more consistency and speed to really make life difficult for the stronger opposition we sometimes face. SRB
v Winchester House 3 - 3
A thrilling game between two evenly matched sides, saw Spratton take an early, and probably undeserved lead. After pressure from Winchester, the ball broke and a mix-up in defence saw James Glew slot home to take the lead. Another breakout goal saw us 2-0 up, and on the stroke of half time Ben Thompson saved a penalty flick. The 2nd half was much more even, but with 15 minutes to go House pulled one back, then another, and with 2 minutes left scored the likely winner. But, a late short corner saw Luke McManus flick home a dramatic equaliser - what a game! SRB
