Match Reports

v Oakham  3 - 1

This was an excellent start to the season and the team can be really pleased with all the positives that came out of the match. Two goals from Ben Kennedy and one from Sam Williams gave the side a well deserved victory. A dominant second half saw the team making good use of all the possession. Quick passing and players working hard to use the right side of the field, meant chances were created. Still plenty to work on but a great confidence boost.

v Witham Hall  5 - 1

Another very promising game from the team who put together some superb passages of play. Witham had a few very good players who proved a constant threat throughout the match. However our team work and the fast passing opened them up on numerous occasions. With the defence more organised in the second half and the midfield winning the lions share of the ball a solid victory was achieved. We now look forward to a potentially tough fixture against Bilton Grange.

v Bilton Grange  3 - 3

This was a fantastic match played between two evenly matched sides. Chances went begging at both ends and a draw is probably a fair result. Once again we looked dangerous on the break and when the ball was moved quickly opportunities arose. Robbie playing his first season in goal made a superb save off a penalty flick and was off his line fast and cleared with authority. Things still need to tighten up a little more at the back and we must try not to give the ball away so easily. However a pleasing result against a traditionally strong hockey school.

v Kimbolton  5 - 1

The first home match of the season saw the 1st XI produce a stunning second half display. The passing at pace is becoming slicker and players are becoming more confident in their respective positions. It was also good to see a more decisive approach in the opposition 'D'. Captain Thomas Mourant was again a considerable force in the centre of midfield and a far more assured display at the back gave the side a great platform to launch their attacks. Henry Strides pace down the right and the predatory skills of Kennedy, Williams and Rose gave the team another well deserved victory. However, tougher challenges lie ahead.

v Bedford Prep  3 - 1

This was an inspirational performance from the 1st XI and underlines the progress being made in this sport. Playing against a big school like Bedford does tend to focus the mind and is was critical that we at least matched them in terms of effort and commitment around the pitch. We did this and so much more! Mourant and Morris dominated the midfield exchanges and their work rate was incredible. At the back we were strong and organised, clearing the ball decisively when under pressure. Up front we were sharp in the D and tested their keeper on several occasions. A brilliant result and a special performance.

v Trent College (U12A's)  9 - 0

This was a superb perfromance from the whole team again. The passing was quick and accurate and the workrate once again stood out. Despite being one sided the team managed to keep their shape and discipline and didn't fall into the trap of getting greedy. With the improvements made over the last 2 years we will look to go back to playing their Under 13A side next year. The result meant the team have gone unbeaten this term and looking back it was a huge disappointment to have lost the Winchester House game to the weather. We can now look forward to the 7 a side tournament on Saturday.
