Year 2 'Hunting Adventure' (March 10)

Hunting Adventure
I whispered “I’m so excited.” I was going on my first hunting trip. There was a gale outside. I was prepared to go. Soon I found the seal’s breathing hole. I waited and waited for three hours. Then it was time. I worked swiftly and silently. I stabbed the seal and brought it home. It took a long time to bring it home to the igloo. My family will be so happy. I got home and some of my family needed a new pair of mittens. A new pair of lovely boots. “Yes I’ve got one.” I said. I was so happy. I had a large celebration.

Hunting Adventure
Waiting, waiting for the seal to come, my Kayak is swerving to and fro. We are watching just in case, over there, there could be the deadly teeth of a polar bear. The wind is howling but I can’t turn back, I’ve got to catch this seal or we will starve for another night. There are dangers in the Arctic and I am filled with fright, but I’ve got to catch this seal even if I freeze because my family and I have to have something to eat! Why am I so weary? I’ve only been here for an hour. Now I hear a plodding – wait it could be....yes it’s a polar bear! Oh help! Oh please. Now I realise I have to flee before those sharp claws catch me, because this won’t be fun! Oh now I need to run.

Christmas Plays (December 09)

Early in November, Pre-Prep swung into action with its usual noise and enthusiasm to mark the beginning of Christmas! For several weeks, children practised singing carols and songs from Cinderella, played precision instruments and learned their lines. Then at long last, on December 11th and 12th everything came together to create two magical performances of The Nativity by Reception and Year 1 and Cinderella by Year 2. All the children behaved beautifully and there was not a dry eye in the house when Buttons and Cinderella sang ‘Everyone’s gone to the ball’.

Reception - Assembly ' Pumpkin Soup' (October 09)

To see more photographs click this link to the Gallery.Pumpkin Soup

After only seven weeks at school the Reception children performed their first Class Assemblies in front of the Pre-Prep Department.

Mrs Sanchez’s children explained how, within their work on ‘The Five Senses’, they had made soup, inspired by the story ‘Pumpkin Soup’ by Helen Cooper.

They excitedly performed different actions and described beautifully, in their big voices, how they had chopped onions, sliced up squidgy pumpkin and added a ‘pipkin’ of salt, before proudly showing their wooden spoon puppets of the story characters Duck, Cat and Squirrel.

Sir Teachalot Taught a Lot! (September 09)

The day began as any other but little did Year 2 know that they were about to get a visit from a brave knight who was to fill their day with action packed adventure and fun!

Registration completed, we went to the hall where we were surprised to find a gentleman sharpening a very, very long sword….. we all sat very, very quietly! He introduced himself and then went on to show us how armour had changed and developed from the year 400AD. What fun it was to try on the armour and hold the huge weapons. We all learned that a squire or knight had to ‘grow stronger’. Even the teachers found it difficult to stand under the sheer weight of the mail and armour. After break everyone had the opportunity to joust using a wooden horse and lance. It was much harder than we expected and only one brave squire, Sir Alex Summers, managed to collect all four target hoops. During the afternoon the children build a concentric castle and graphically discovered why castles were built at varying heights. The most exciting part was destroying the castle with a trebuchet. Riya fired the final shot which brought down the strong keep. To end a wonderful day, Sir Teachalot involved the children in telling the story of a very misunderstood dragon and a brave prince.

Year 2 - Wearing Victorian Costumes (May 09)

Dearest Ma and Pa,

I’m really tired and I have worked very hard. I’ve mostly been polishing boots and shoes. I’m only a Junior Servant anyway. I keep working and mostly cleaning so I really missed you ma. I don’t normally get paid. I really wish I could go home tomorrow. I can’t go home now or a few minutes or anytime today. Yesterday, when the lunch bell went, I was concentrating so hard I missed lunch and lunch break! I wish you could come and take me home for at least one day. I sweep the leaves and polish a saddle and even clean toilets! I want to go away from Holdenby House. Oh I really want to go.

                           Samuel (Samuel O’Dell-2H)

Dearest Ma and Pa,

I have been chosen to stay as a Laundry Runner and I hope I don’t break my finger. My arm will really ache by using the dolly. It is hard to do the mangle. When you do put the clothes in the mangle you can not do it with your finger. You do it with tongs. We have to sleep in the attic and share a bed. The only thing I like is Mrs Crumpet’s cooking. It was very dark up the staircase. I shared a bed with a person who has been here a long time.

                        Love from
                                Charlotte (Charlotte Kemsley-Pein-2J)

Dearest Ma and Pa,

It is frightening up in the attic. Mrs Bumbridge sleeps up there, she is a Drudge. But, we are not allowed our own room. With all the scattering mice, it is difficult to sleep. When you look at the cheese (which is your breakfast for the next morning), you feel very, very, very hungry. On the next morning, I have to do jobs before breakfast! My favourite job is when I polish shoes because I like getting dirty! But my worst job was cleaning the books, because when I slap the books all the dust goes into my eyes.  When I have breakfast, Mrs Bumbridge sometimes comes down with hard cheese crumbs, because all the mice eat the hard cheese!

My Day in the Mine (May 09)

When I got in the mine, it was pitch black. I was so scared when I first got in. I heard a rat then another, then one was nibbling my bread. I had to pull a ventilation shaft. I couldn’t stop doing it or else my dad or my mummy would die. – Elysee Seguin (2J)

In the mine, it was hard to breathe. I had to open the gates, I was cramped. Soon it was lunch. After lunch I heard a rumbling sound, I opened the gate quickly and through went the cart. I had to pull a chain for people to breathe. I had to do that all day. I saw some rats. I always make friends with the rats. Soon, the bell rang. At last it was home time. I could stop. Robbie Mason (2J)

As I went down, I squeezed my brother’s hand to wish him good luck. Then we reached the bottom with a THUD! I went on my way. It was very dark and I was very frightened. All I had was my little candle, so I set to work. I had to pull a chain so my brother could breathe. I knew it was nearly time to come up. Then I stopped for lunch. I had to share my lunch with a rat. Then it was time to come up. I was very tired. Holly Britton (2H)

I was crouching down to get into the shaft. It was dark, very dark. Just then, my candle went out and that was it for the day….no light! I was lonely and frightened. A rat was scuffling around looking for food. A rumbling sound was starting to get louder and louder. I pulled up my cramped legs and opened the door for the carriage. I was still pulling the rope. I only had 5 minutes to go and then the whistle went to go home. Sam Evans (2H)

Year 2 & 3 - Visit to see 'The Lion the Witch & the Wardrobe' at Birmingham Rep (14.1.09)

Bombs were dropping so the four children went on a train to a safe place. They met  the professor and the professor said the children could stay at his house. They saw a wardrobe and Peter, Lucy, Susan and Edmund went into the wardrobe.  They fell in the snow! It was freezing so they put on four of the professor’s coats. Lucy wanted to see Mr Tumnus. When they were there Lucy went to the house. The house was all crashed and Lucy found a note and took it to Peter. It said Mr Tumnus had been arrested by the White Witch.

As soon as I sat down it started.  The Germans were firing bombs.  Four children were at the station.  Their names were Peter, Susan, Edmund and Lucy.  When they got to wherever the place was, they saw a Professor.  He said “Hello.”  He had a housekeeper called Macready.  She showed them to their rooms.

In the morning they explored the house.  In one room there was nothing but a wardrobe.  Peter said “Let’s go and explore another room.”  So all of them went out. Well, not exactly everyone, Lucy stayed.  She went into the wardrobe.  She shut the door behind her.

My favourite character was Peter because he had a sword.

It was Second World War.  Bombs were dropping. No birds were singing.  A train was pulling in.  On the platform were thousands and thousands of people.  Some names of the children that I will introduce to you were Peter, Susan, Lucy and, last but not least, Edmund.  Those four were going to the countryside.  As soon as they sat down a bomb had hit Buckingham Palace.  It was a beautiful train.

The countryside was peaceful.  They came to the house and they saw the housekeeper standing at the top of some steps.

The next day it was raining. “Bother!” shouted Peter, “but we can still explore in the house.”  So off they went.  The first room they went into was an empty room except for a wardrobe.  Lucy went in and met a fawn.  “Hello.” Said Lucy.

I was very excited.  The characters walked into the room and then suddenly Lucy could see a wardrobe.  Lucy stepped into the wardrobe.  She felt cold, then she was amazed because it was snowing.  Then she met someone.  The man said “I’m Mr Tumnus.”

Soon we sat down.  No one saw anything on the stage.  All we could see was some stairs and some big circles.  Then it started and four children came on the stage and bombs were falling.  The children’s names were Peter, Susan, Edmund and Lucy.  Lucy went to a room with a wardrobe.  Lucy went in and realised she was in Narnia!  The other children did not believe her.  Then all the children went to Narnia.

Do you know what made me jump?  It was Aslan.  When it was the battle, Aslan got the Witch.  I Liked it.

When I sat down I was very excited.  I loved the special effects.  I thought the wolves were very good actors and Mr Tumnus was a very good singer.  Edmund was mean in the beginning but he was good in the end.  I liked Mr Tumnus the best.  I loved the White Witch’s dress.

Before I sat down I was very excited.  Suddenly there was a big bang.  The audience went quiet.  The show was starting. My favourite characters were Aslan and Mr Tumnus.  There was a giant.  He opened the witch’s gates.

As soon as we got there I was enormously excited because I couldn’t see the wardrobe anywhere.  My favourite character was Aslan.  He was very handsome and brave.  The White Witch was evil because she made people into stone.  Aslan jumped into the audience.  I was terrified because he jumped out right next to me.  He was only two seats away from me.  I loved his costume and the wolves’ moves.  Aslan roared so loud.  I never knew that he could roar that loud.

There were lots of special effects.  I thought that it was great.  I really didn’t know it would be that good.  I liked the witch’s wand.

The story is about four children who had to leave London.  It all started with a wardrobe.  I was really excited and when Aslan came on stage it was a good sound effect of a real lion’s roar.  I thought the wolves were good at prowling.  But my favourite character was Aslan.  The Beavers were funny and I liked Mr Tumnus.  But if I had a choice out of Aslan or wolves it would be a wolf.

We were sitting down and we were waiting for the show to start.  When the lights went out it was about to start.  We were all excited and we saw some children come on.  In London they were sent to live somewhere else because in London there was going to be a war.

When they were there they looked around the house.  They looked in one room and there was just a wardrobe.  Everyone went off and played but Lucy stayed there and went in the wardrobe.  When she got out she was in a wood.  It was called Narnia.  She met a man called Mr Tumnus and he said “You are a daughter of Eve.  Do you want some tea at my house?”   Lucy said “Yes please but I can’t stay long.”

Mr Tumnus said “Okay, off we go then.”

Later, the White Witch came on with her dwarf.  Edmund went in the wardrobe.  When Edmund came out of the wardrobe he was in the woods.  He met the White Witch.  She said “What do you like?”  Edmund said “Turkish delight.”

When Lucy and Edmund came out of the wardrobe he said to the others that she was making it all up, and Lucy went off all sad and crying.  Susan and Peter called “Lu’.”

Later on everybody went in the wardrobe.  When they were in the woods Lucy said “Let’s go and see Mr Tumnus.”  When they were at Mr Tumnus’s house Lucy went in first.  When she came out there was a letter.  Peter read it out.  “Sorry but Mr Tumnus has been arrested.”  Lucy cried again.  On the way they met a man called Mr Beaver.  Later, with Mr and Mrs Beaver, they went to see Aslan the King.  When they left Aslan a little while later, Aslan came back to life and they lived happily ever after.
