English

We undertake to enable all children to further, develop and strengthen their basic skills in reading, writing and speaking & listening through a creative approach to English language, and to encourage writing, whether descriptive, empathetic, argumentative or critical. 

The English syllabus follows and exceeds the disciplines outlined in the National Curriculum and the National Literacy Strategy. In order for pupils to develop at the pace best suited to them, they are placed in sets according to their ability from Years 3 to 8.Young Shakespeare Company
 
The English Department has the following goals:
  • To stimulate and encourage a clarity of expression in all areas of written and oral work and to develop creative writing in all its genres.
  • To foster and develop interest in prose, poetry and drama.
  • To introduce and encourage a wide variety of reading through a structured reading programme as well as encouraging personal reading habits.
  • To improve technical skills in writing.
  • To prepare pupils for Common Entrance Examinations and Senior School Scholarships.
  • To develop pupils’ awareness of our literary heritage by introducing them to Shakespeare in both a practical and an academic sense
