Match Reports
The season got underway with the fast and frantic fun of two 6-a-side tournaments. The boys did very well at S. Anselm's reaching the semi-final with ease but then losing off the last ball. The boys won the 3rd place play-off convincingly. The Rugby School Tournament was tougher and we lost to a good Cothill side but without playing at our best. We beat West House to reach the semi-final where we met The Dragon, clearly a strong side, who we restricted to 56 runs but fell short in our run chase. SJSC
v Akeley Wood 05-05-2010 Won by 136 runs
A fine start to our 11-a-side campaign. What was particularly pleasing in our innings was that a number of boys stepped up to support Hamish Merriman's excellent 60. Fraser Ralston, Tom Beal, Euan Wardrop and Tommy Lowe all made very useful contributions. Our huge total of 182-7 in 25 overs meant that the bowling could be shared around. Akeley Wood fell to 46 all out after some tight bowling, good catching and very energetic fielding. SJSC
V Bilton Grange 12.05.10 Match Drawn
We dominated the game but just could not get the last resilient Bilton batsman out. We made a huge 164-8 declared in 25 overs with Hamish Merriman scoring a fine 73 and Tom Beal 19, giving us 29 overs to get Bilton out. This was not quite enough, Bilton finishing on 112 for 9. If a team drops 5 catches, misses stumpings and misses run-out opportunities then they don’t really deserve to win and we were that team on this day. SJSC
V Winchester House 15.05.10 Lost by 1 run
A cracker of a game. We did extremely well to limit W.H. to 121 for 7 in their 25 overs. Tight bowling, energetic fielding and 3 fine catches kept their score to a gettable target. With Hamish not making runs on this occasion, it meant that the other boys would have to step up and they certainly did that. Fraser R 15, Euan W a very good 35, James K 20 and Tommy L 19 – but not quite enough. We were up with the run-rate throughout but just slipped in the last couple of overs, needing two from the last ball or one to tie. A desperate run out handed W.H. a victory in a brilliantly entertaining game of cricket. SJSC
V Bedford Prep 19.05.10 Lost by 4 wickets
Not a game to remember! We batted very poorly, headless and lacking cricketing intelligence. Only Tom Beal batted with some sense, finishing on 11 not out. The bowling and fielding was better, reducing Bedford to 61 for 6 with James Knight getting 2 for 12. Another 30 runs could have made all the difference. SJSC
V Maidwell Hall 22.05.10
Another cracker! Maidwell put us in the field on a scorcher of a day. Euan Wardrop bowled well (1-14) and William Leng caught a stunner of a catch to remove one of Maidwell’s good batsman. Their total of 152 for 2 was very imposing but the boys must never allow heads to drop. They need to learn to play the Australian way – a win is always possible from any situation. A steady start meant that we could push on at pace. Hamish’s 39 and Euan’s 26 really gave the team inspiration and belief but when they both fell in the same over, we really could have given up the game. James K kept the score ticking over, however, but it was the brutal hitting from Tommy Lowe (24 not out) and Tom Beal (31 not out) who saw us safely home with 10 balls to spare. A tremendous result – and another great game of cricket played in a super spirit. SJSC
V Witham Hall 26.05.10 Won 7 wickets
We won this rather one-sided game very easily. Every side has a ‘shocker’ (we did last week against Bedford) and Witham had something of a shocker here. Having said that, our bowlers really did bowl well and the fielders took some good catches to do the damage. Once Hamish had got their very good opener out with a clever slower ball, well caught behind by Chris Bolton who took two excellent keeper’s catches, Witham were unable to build up any sort of a total. Hamish and James Knight bowled with superb accuracy to take 3 wickets apiece and Charlie Mourant finished them off taking 2 wickets in the 4 balls he bowled! The rearranged batting order knocked off the runs quite quickly for the loss of 3 wickets. SJSC
