Chemistry Fun

On Friday lunchtime Mr Bradnam did some fun experiments and demonstrations in the laboratory using household chemicals. He showed how different invisible gases have different properties; how to make a hard boiled egg bouncy; how to make a mini fireworks show using food colouring and washing up liquid; and how to hold fire in your hand! He also made the strange substance Oobleck from cornflour and water, which when mixed correctly, makes an odd substance that acts like a solid if you apply lots of force to it, but then will also run through your fingers like a liquid. He threw it in lumps against the shed, where it bounced off like a solid, and then dissolved on the ground like a liquid. To finish with he made geysers of coke using Mentos and Diet Cola, and managed to shoot one as high as the Pre-Prep roof. All the children enjoyed the demonstrations, and will hopefully go away and try some of these experiments out for themselves.
