St Faith's Athletics Match (St Faith's, St John's, Perse Prep, Perse Boys, The Leys, Wellingborough, Spratton Hall)
The season got under way with a superb victory for the team at the St Faith's meeting. Athletes from Year 4 to 8 competed and we sent a mixed Girls and Boys team. Spratton with 493 points just pipped the hosts on 482 as the Overall Winners. Their were a large number of excellent performances and it was great to see some of the younger members of the squad taking part for the first time. We will now be working hard to prepare for our own match in two weeks time.

Spratton Hall Athletics Match 2009 (Spratton Hall, Bedford Prep, Wellingborough Prep, Maidwell Hall, Bedford High)
This year we invited two new schools to take part in our annual athletics match. Bedford Prep and Bedford High certainly added some extra competition to both the boys and Girls events. Once again, the Spratton teams came out on top. The school has now won this competition 5 years in a row, a tremendous achievement and just reward for all the hard work put in during the Monday and Thursday athletics clubs. With over 200 pupils taking part it was an excellent spectacle for all those watching. It also provided those taking part with much needed competition prior to the big regional championships after half term. The Final results were as follows:

Boys
1st Spratton Hall 359 Points
2nd Bedford Prep 328 Points
3rd Maidwell 290 Points
3rd Wellingborough 290 Points
Girls
1st Spratton Hall 226 Points
2nd Wellingborough 190 Points
3rd Bedford High 134 Points*

Year 5 Tudor Hall Athletics - June 2009
Our Year 5 girls were invited to take part in an inaugural fun athletics event arranged by Tudor Hall. Although competitors from other schools ranged from Year 5 girls to Year 6 and many included boys who competed against the girls in the same events, we still had some fine performances. Georgia Bowen was outstanding in the Long Jump as was Francesca Aldridge in the High Jump. Jessica Womack made the final of the 600m. Megan Lowe and Hannah Crowley produced some fine distances in the shot. We also had success in the relay which had been adapted for 6 runners. All in all an interesting event and we finished 4th.
Years 6/7/8 Bedford IAPS Athletics - June 2009
37 Spratton athletes took part in the Regional Championships held at Bedford International Stadium. It is widely recognised as the toughest region in the country with 47 schools taking part this year. Despite the fierce competition Spratton once again produced a superb set of performances with us qualifying for the National Finals in 11 events. Many congratulations to the following that will represent the Eastern Region at Birmingham’s Alexander Stadium on Monday 29th June.

It is also important to congratulate the achievements of those who just missed out. Particular mention must go to Tara Patel who finished 2nd in her U14Girls 1500m but due to an absent athlete with a faster time was unable to go through despite being runner up. This was bitterly disappointing for Tara who just missed out in Years 6 and 7. However her service to Spratton Cross Country and Athletics over the years will mark her down as one the great contributors to these sports. Amelia Wilson also just missed out by coming 4th in both the 100m final and Long Jump. These were wonderful performances against girls twice her size, I know she will be back next year more determined than ever! Jack Flood qualified fastest for the U12 Hurdles final but unfortunately injured his knee in the process and was unable to run in the final. Jack’s improvement over the hurdles this term has been fantastic and I am sure he will be in the mix again next year. Finally special mention should go to Josh Cara and Jamie Sherlock for setting new regional records in their events.

Years 4 & 5 Cambridge IAPS Athletics - June 2009
20 Spratton pupils took part in the 2009 Junior Regional Athletics Championships at Cambridge University’s Athletics Track. As usual with this event the standard was very high and with 30 schools taking part just reaching the final (top 8) is a remarkable achievement. It is also the first serious athletics meeting for our Year 4 athletes and they will have gained an enormous amount from the whole experience. IAPS National Athletics Finals, Birmingham Stadium - June 2009
On a very warm day 12 Spratton athletes represented the Eastern Region at this year's IAPS National Championships. The pupils managed to win 7 medals (1 Gold, 4 Silver, 2 Bronze). When you add in two 4th place finishes, one can see what a successful day it was against the best prep school athletes in the country. The performance of the day was the U12 Boys winning the 4 x 100m relay in a new school record (for this age) of 55.8 secs. This was the first time in 15 years of teaching that I have seen an U12 team break the 56 second barrier. Congratulations to all those who took part.
