Spratton Under 10s Win Oakham Rugby Sevens Tournament

In our pool:
V S. Anselm’s Won 30-0
V Foremarke Hall Won 25-0
V Glebe House Won 30-5
V King Henry VIII Won 30-10
We won our group convincingly and so progressed to the main Cup Competition.

Semi-Final v St Hugh’s Won 25-10
Final v King Henry VIII Won 25-5
This was a tremendous triumph for the Under 10s. Several coaches of the other sides at the tournament said that we were by far the most impressive side there and that the Rugby we played was outstanding!

Hamish Merriman just pipped Tommy Lowe to the Player of the Tournament Award but all ten players should be very proud of their achievement.

~ Tournament Winners

v Maidwell Hall 15-10
This was a very close and tough game against a good Maidwell side and we probably did not deserve the win. Two late tries saw us home but there will have to be improved forward play, better passing and we will need to be much quicker onto the loose ball. SC

v Akeley Wood 40-0
The boys played very well with vastly improved handling and solid, powerful rucking. Some of the timing of the passes was most effective, leading to some very fine tries. An excellent victory. SC

v Maidwell Hall 30-0
In wet, muddy conditions the boys played some very good rugby with some fine tries following excellent handling. The boys’ tackling was absolutely solid and they didn’t let Maidwell into the game at all. Very well done indeed. SC

v Stamford 50-0
Although this was a rather one-sided game, the boys had to work hard to create scoring opportunities. The rucking again was strong and the passing and handling was tremendous resulting in some very good tries. In the second half we piled on the pressure and we ran in 7 tries. Now for the Bilton Grange Tournament... SC

Bilton Grange Rugby Festival
We were very pleased to be invited to defend our title as champions of 2007. In a five match ‘Round Robin’ tournament we played Bilton Grange first and won 10-5 in a close game that we just shaded. We then beat Eversfield Prep 10-0 but we made too many simple errors and we were some way off our best. We beat Akeley Wood 5-0 then in a cracking match with Maidwell Hall we drew 5-5, again basic errors let Maidwell back into the game. This left us needing to beat Swanbourne House in our last match. The boys accomplished this 10-0 thus winning the tournament. All of our tries were scored by Tom Beal and Tommy Lowe, with Hamish Merriman weighing in with the all important try against Maidwell. The team was very ably led by James Knight who proudly received the trophy. Great stuff, boys! SC

v Lincroft 0-10
It is always pleasing to play schools new to our fixture list who will offer us some tough competition and Lincroft certainly did that. It was unfortunate that illness and injury played a cruel hand and we were depleted before and during the game. It was a very good game however and we were well in it for most of the first half – if we could have scored when we were on their line, it could have been very different. As it was we were beaten by a bigger, tougher and stronger side. We hope to return to winning ways next Wednesday. SC

v Wellingborough 30-5
Despite having a depleted side again, the boys played well enough to win the game quite easily. Some really well taken tries including two each for Tom Beal (one after excellent handling from the backs) and James Knight and a fine solo effort from Tommy Lowe ensured a comfortable victory. Well done, boys! SC

V Swanbourne 25-0
This was a high-quality performance. On a cold day, the finishing was clinical with some fantastic tries following effective forward play and the backs running at pace with excellent passing. The boys’ defence was tremendous and they kept the ball alive for long periods. Very well done, indeed. Two games to go! SC

v Bedford Prep 5-30
This was a very disappointing performance. Although Bedford thoroughly deserved their victory, poor tackling and sluggish defence gifted Bedford at least three of their tries. We scored a very good try early on but then sat back and let Bedford play. We were caught in possession too often and failed to keep the ball alive which we normally do so well. I hope the boys can pick themselves up for the last match on Saturday. SC

v Bedford Modern 35-5
A fine way to end the term. With several players again missing the boys really played as a team and worked hard together. Effective rucking and hard tackling led to some impressive tries - well done boys for an enjoyable and successful season. SC
