Match Reports

Beachborough Tournament (06.03.10)

A great day for the 1st VII.  The target was simple, to win every game.  Bloxham pulled out through illness, so each team played each other twice.

We dominated every match, making our shots count.

Beachborough         2 - 1              2 - 1

St. Hughes             1 - 0              3 - 0

The main positive that can be taken from this tournament is the way the team gelled and worked for each other.  It is imperative that we perform like this on Friday against Oakham to give them a tough and competitive game.

The Beachborough Head Master, Mr Jonathan Whybrow, made a special mention during the prize giving about Robbie Povey's performance throughout the day.  He was extremely solid in goal, this enabled the outfield players to focus on turning defensive play into attacking very quickly.

V Witham Hall (23.01.10) Won 2 - 1

The boys have worked hard over the past week and this showed in the excellent display against Witham Hall. They showed good understanding of tactics and positional play which provided the base to dominate the game. Several chances to score were stopped due to some goal line defending from the visitors, but towards the end of the first half we went one up from a well worked free hit outside the D. The half-time team talk focus was to keep playing the same way and the goals will come. Another one did, halfway through the second half a great back line dribble resulted in a simple, but classy, tap in. Just before the end, the visitors did get a consolation goal due to some poor communication; this was the only real error in the match. Overall, a great performance for the first game of the season - however, we really need to be focused for the full game against Bilton Grange otherwise they will punish us. JWW

V Bilton Grange (27.01.10) Lost 1 – 4

A very good hockey school arrived with little preparation time prior to push back and Spratton took advantage of this in the first few minutes. Unfortunately the boys had nothing to show for their dominance in that time, so when Bilton started to settle they began to dictate play. Spratton pressurised the Bilton players well, however their composure and skill level enabled them to score two goals before half time. After the break Spratton desperately tried to get back into the game with some great team play and shots, but Bilton matched our determination. They then slotted two more goals in before we scored a nice conciliation goal. The positive from the match is that we have now seen the quality of hockey that can be played at this level. If we learn from this, Spratton have the potential to develop into a successful team. JWW

V Kimbolton (30.01.10) Drew 2 – 2

A superb match to follow the loss to Bilton last Wednesday. During the first half, the team showed great understanding of hockey and managed to get two goals ahead of the home side. Unfortunately, due to a defensive mishap, we conceded a goal just before half time. I believe this knocked the confidence of the boys. After the break we looked a different team and failed to keep composed with the ball and kept choosing the wrong options. Also credit must go to Kimbolton for capitalising on this by scoring a goal to draw the scores level. We need to think back to the Witham game where we stayed focussed for the whole match and came out with a result. We will need this sorted for our next match, Oundle. JWW

V Oundle (03.02.10) Won 1 – 0

What progress! The aim of the match was to remain focused for the whole fifty minutes, and this was achieved. Both teams attacked with style, but were matched by well organised defences. Our left and right sided players played with understanding by being reliable in defence as well as supportive in attack. This allowed our creative players to make the most of their time in possession. Spratton scored from a well worked short corner with only a few minutes left on the clock. The next area to work on is offensive play, by making the most out of our opportunities in the ‘D’. Let’s keep developing! JWW
