Music is taught throughout the school from Year 3 to Year 8. Pupils are given the opportunity to develop key skills in music by taking part in a variety of different practical and written activities. These skills included listening and appraising, composing and performing. The curriculum is designed to give pupils the opportunity to experience music from different genres.

In Year 3, all pupils learn about musical notation and rhythm reading through taking part in whole class recorder lessons. They participate in a variety of practical activities to develop their basic skills in music giving them a good foundation for further work. Singing is also a large part of the curriculum in Year 3.

   

Music in Years 4, 5 and 6 comprises of several individual units each lasting half a term. Each unit is designed to develop pupils listening skills helping them identify features of music such as instrumentation, pulse, rhythm, dynamics, tonality, texture and timbre.  This is often followed by a composition task to reinforce the work covered previously. Alongside the practical work, all pupils learn music theory developing their understanding of mus

ical notation. Singing is included throughout the different years with pupils taking part in several singing projects.

 

In Years 7 and 8 pupils use the composition programme Sibelius 6. Music is composed in different styles and compositional forms to a set brief. These styles and forms include minimalism and theme and variations.

 

Throughout the year, there are many opportunities for pupils to perform solos or as part of an ensemble. These include in class, in Assemblies, Informal Concerts, End of Term Concerts and House Competitions.
