As one of the core subjects, the importance of children understanding the basics in their Mathematical studies, at an early stage, cannot be over-stressed. To this end, great emphasis is placed upon mental arithmetic and its use in solving problems. From the youngest in the Pre-Preparatory department through to preparation for the higher-tier papers in Year Eight, children are encouraged to think for themselves and present material which is well-presented, accurate in content and worthy of display.
The syllabus is based on the attainment targets of the National Curriculum and extended to cover the requirements for Common Entrance. Maths is set by ability from Year Two, a system of promotion being encouraged, and demotion entertained only if it is in the child’s best interest. Extra assistance is offered to those children throughout the school who require additional time to master the basics. All children are encouraged to seek advice and assistance at all times to further their Mathematical studies.
